Hydrogen energy: Can hydrogen be used as an alternative fuel? Will it be Successfull

Fuel prices in our country are increasing day by day. The central and state governments are showing no sign of reducing tax on petroleum products. In addition, electric vehicles that are not harmful to the environment are likely to take some more time to get popularity in India. In this context, the Central Government has announced that it will focus on using hydrogen as fuel. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the National Hydrogen Energy Mission (NHEM) will be launched in the country in 2021-22. In the latest budget speech, she announced the NHEM.Officials will prepare a draft on the National Hydrogen Energy Mission in the next two months. A roadmap is going to be prepared to use hydrogen as a fuel source. Special attention will be paid to the green hydrogen and hydrogen economy, which is not particularly harmful to the environment.

Experts say that the use of hydrogen fuel in the transport sector has many benefits. One-third of carbon emissions are coming out of this sector. This is increasing environmental pollution. These greenhouse gases emitted by fossil fuels can be tied up by hydrogen fuel. It is likely to produce better results than conventional electric vehicles. But hydrogen technology is not yet fully developed in our country. This may take a long time for this proposed hydrogen fuel to materialize completely.

India imposes targets

Our country aims to become a carbon emission-free country by 2050. In the 2021 budget, the Union Government proposed to produce 175 gigawatts of renewable energy energy by 2022.A sum of Rs.1500 crore has been allocated for this purpose. The amount will be spent on renewable energy sources and hydrogen energy mission.

Why only hydrogen?

India is heavily dependent on coal sources for electricity. Such fossil fuel can be replaced with hydrogen. This will result in a huge fall in prices. The growing population gets energy according to it. In addition, hydrogen is widely available in nature. This very light, densely populated gas can be easily burned compared to petrol. So that more energy can be produced at a lower cost. The use of hydrogen as fuel in the transport sector reduces the intensity of greenhouse emissions to a great extent. Iron, steel and chemicals are increasingly transported in our country. It requires a large amount of fuel.Replacing it with hydrogen will also benefit the government and the environment.

How many types of hydrogen?

The hydrogen we get can be divided into three categories. The list includes grey hydrogen, blue hydrogen and green hydrogen. Gray hydrogen is fossil fuels, natural gas. A large amount can be produced from hydrocarbons such as. Carbon dioxide comes as a by-product in this process.

-Blue hydrogen is also collected from fossil fuels. In this process, dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emitted as by-products can be stored. As a result, pollution can be prevented. It is a better fuel source compared to grey hydrogen.

-Green hydrogen can be produced from renewable energy such as solar power and wind power. Water can be divided into hydrogen and oxygen through electricity. In this process, water and moisture come as by-products. They do not harm the environment. Hence it is called green hydrogen.

What are the benefits of electric vehicles?

Electric vehicles are also of three types.Hydrogen-powered vehicles work much better than conventional electric vehicles.

HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicles)

They take less energy than petroleum products.Very small amounts of emissions are released from these vehicles.

BEV (Battery Powered Electric Vehicles)

These vehicles are battery-assisted. The vehicle's battery can be recharged with the help of electricity. There is no need for petrol in these.

PEV (Plug in Hybrid Vehicles)

They are designed to run with the help of either battery and petrol.

FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles)

They can be driven with the help of hydrogen and oxygen. Although they're completely electric vehicles. Their battery cannot be recharged like BEVల. Hydrogen and oxidation need to be refilled after fuel runs out.

Benefits of hydrogen fuel

Using hydrogen as fuel completely reduces carbon emissions. Environmental pollution is reduced. Once hydrogen vehicles are fully charged, you can travel between 400 and 500 km. Like CNG, hydrogen can be filled in tanks in vehicles. It is lighter than lithium ion batteries used in electric vehicles. Hence, long-distance transport trucks and commercial vehicles will benefit more. This fuel can be filled in just five minutes.

Will it be successful?

So far, only three companies in our country are making hydrogen-powered vehicles. Honda, Toyota and Hyundai are developing them. By 2020, 80 lakh electric vehicles in the country were on the roads. But at the same time, only 25,000 hydrogen FCEVలను are used in India. There are only less than 500 hydrogen fuel filling stations in the country. The number of these has to increase. People think there are chances of exploding because it is a very light gas. It should be stored at high pressure. This can cause accidents. From all this, it seems likely that it will take much longer than expected to substitute hydrogen for fossil fuels.
